भगवद्गीता १.४

अत्र शूरा महेष्वासा भीमार्जुनसमा युधि ।

युयुधानो विराटश्च द्रुपदश्च महारथः ॥ १.४ ॥

अत्र

  • Indeclinable अव्यय
     

  • ∴ Here, in this army

शूराः

  • शूर = brave, hero, valiant
     

  • Its पुल्लिङ्ग प्रथमा बहुवचन form
     

  • ∴ Heroes, brave ones

महेष्वासाः

  • महा (Great, large) + ईषु (arrow) + अस (wielder) 

  • ∴ महेष्वास = great archer

  • Its पुल्लिङ्ग प्रथमा बहुवचन Form

  • ∴ Great bowmen

भीमार्जुनसमा

  • भीम + अर्जुन (dual compound)

  • समा = equal to

  • Its पुल्लिङ्ग प्रथमा बहुवचन form

  • ∴ Equal to Bhima and Arjuna

युधि

  • युध् = to fight

  • Its नपुंसकलिङ्ग सप्तमी एकवचन form

  • ∴ In battle

युयुधानः

  • Name of a warrior (Satyaki), a Yadava chief

  • Its पुल्लिङ्ग प्रथमा एकवचन form

विराटः

  • King of Matsya kingdom (where Pandavas stayed incognito)

  • पुल्लिङ्ग प्रथमा एकवचन

  • King of Panchala, father of Draupadi and Dhrishtadyumna

धृष्टकेतुश्चेकितानः काशिराजश्च वीर्यवान् ।

पुरुजित्कुन्तिभोजश्च शैब्यश्च नरपुङ्गवः ॥ १.५ ॥

धृष्टकेतुः

  • Name of a warrior, son of King Shishupala

  • Its पुल्लिङ्ग प्रथमा एकवचन form

चेकितानः

  • चेकितान = a king allied with the Pandavas

काशिराजः

  • King of Kashi

युधामन्युश्च विक्रान्त उत्तमौजाश्च वीर्यवान् ।

सौभद्रो द्रौपदेयाश्च सर्व एव महारथाः ॥ १.६ ॥

युधामन्युः

  • Another notable warrior on the Pandava side

Literal & Simplified Translation

In this army (अत्र), there are heroes (शूराः), great archers (महेष्वासाः), equal to Bhima and Arjuna in battle (भीमार्जुनसमा युधि). Yuyudhana, Virata, and Drupada, the great chariot-warrior. Dhrishtaketu, Chekitana, and the mighty King of Kashi. Purujit, Kuntibhoja, and the valiant king Shaibya. Yudhamanyu, the brave Uttamaujas, the son of Subhadra, and the sons of Draupadi — all are mighty chariot-warriors.
